Quotes: “Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways, in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting.” --Huxley “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It is wholesome and bracing for the mind to have its facilities kept on the stretch.” --Augustus Hare (English writer 1834-1903) “Be as careful of the books you read as of the company you keep, for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as the latter.” –Paxton Hood Purpose: -To promote family togetherness through literature and learning about books through a fun, interactive, and memorable way. How Does It Work? --The Book Club members will meet monthly to discuss the book they had selected to read. Typically following discussion will be an activity and snack or movie of the book if available. If you can’t make the meeting you are still encouraged to read the selection. The past, current and future book selections will be posted on school’s website. Group Organization:
-Bring questions to generate thought and discussion -Choosing a specific passage to read aloud to elicit pointed discussion -Bring applicable articles or information to enrich the discussion i.e. biographical information on the author, or professional reviews and commentary on the book -Bring snack -Bring personal photos or articles that are related to the book -Eventually everyone takes a turn at leading the group for a meeting. (Teacher resource guides are often available to use to help generate ideas) What to read? -Ideally the group will try to cover a variety of literature such as, short stories, nonfiction, essays, historical fiction, classics, biographies, autobiographies, religious fantasy, etc… -The group will vote on which books they want to read for the next meeting 2 meetings -Books above the younger children’s reading level can have it read to them or they can read an adapted or abridged/illustrated version of the story if it is available. -Children whose reading level is above the current book selection, can cover other books by the author or read related books and contribute those insights to the Book Club discussion Book Availability: -A select number of book sets and related materials are available through the school. You can sign for a book through Mr. Karcher to return at the next meeting. If there are not enough books available, use the public library or purchase a copy of the book to own at a local bookstore or on-line. “Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways, in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting.” --Huxley
